Industrial Revolution Exploration and Discovery Lesson Plan

Presentation on Samuel Morse and Morse code

Below you’ll find my lesson plan focused on Phase 2: Industrialization and the Church’s Response, 1800-1850: Exploration and Discovery Week from “World Empires, World Missions, World Wars” by Diana Waring, part of the History Revealed curriculum. This lesson covers students presenting their research projects, a discussion over Jose de San Martin, and a Timeline. I used this during a weekly 50-minute homeschool co-op world history class!

Exploration and Discovery Presentations

Presentation on Florence Nightingale and her work in the nursing profession

Presentation on how the Industrial Revolution changed the textile industry

Presentation on Samuel Morse and Morse code

Presentation on The Year of Revolutions: 1848

1. Students present their Exploration and Discovery research reports. Pass out tickets based on what they scored on the rubric. (If a student scores 8 points, they get 8 tickets.)

YOU WILL NEED:

  • tickets and “Rubrics for Grading Creative Projects in the History Revealed Curriculum” by Diana Waring

2. Discuss what students liked about the presentations. What made one more interesting or engaging than another? What is something they heard they thought was interesting?

Option 1: José de San Martín

3. If you have a few extra minutes, watch a video and discuss someone that no one presented on during class. We watched the below video José de San Martín : The General Who Liberated South America by History Uncovered. (We watched it at 1.75 speed.)

4. Go over Question 7 on José de San Martín from p. 73 from “World Empires, World Missions, World Wars” by Diana Waring

YOU WILL NEED:

Option 2: Timeline

3. If you have extra time, another option (which we did not do) would be to begin completing the outline from pp. 82-83 from “World Empires, World Missions, World Wars” by Diana Waring

YOU WILL NEED:

  • World Empires, World Missions, World Wars by Diana Waring and something to write with (brought by students)

5. Go over homework for next week. During the last unit, some students had questions about the maps, so have everyone turn to page 86 in the books to see where the directions are for the maps.

Homework

  1. Complete one or both of the maps on pp. 87-88. The directions are on p. 86. (You’ll get 4 tickets per map you complete.)
  2. Optional: Using pp. 94-97 for ideas, consider which Creative Expression project you’ll do on Oct. 30. Begin working on it. It should be on a different person/event than your research project. It will be presented in two weeks.
  3. Optional: Listen to tracks 4-6 of Digging Deeper OR watch a YouTube video on Revival on the Frontier or Charles Finney.
